Biography
Walter Brooks, a commercial artist and graphic designer, died Saturday, June 20, 1987, of heart disease in Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut. He was 65 years old and lived in Norwalk.
Mr. Brooks was the president of the Society of Illustrators from 1971 to 1972. In the 1970's he designed at least a half dozen United States postage stamps, including an 8-cent San Juan commemorative and a 13-cent Indian head.
He helped write, edit and illustrate a series of art instruction books for M. Grumbacher Inc., and he designed greeting cards for business firms.
He was born in Glasgow and was brought to this country as an infant. As a young man he studied art at Cooper Union. After serving in the Army in World War II, he became a commercial artist.
He worked for King Features Syndicate and several book publishers before deciding on a career as a freelance artist in the early 1960's.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; two sons, Christopher, of Washington Crossing, Pa. and David, of Portland, Ore.; a brother, Boyd, of Los Gatos, Calif., and two grandchildren.
