He was born on Christmas Eve, 1868 in Spencer, West Virginia. All of his life, Henry Brown Baker was known more commonly as Harry Brown Baker or simply H.B. Baker. In 1883 at age 15 Harry left West Virginia and went to live in Shawnee, Kansas. It is believed that he made the acquaintance of Frederic Remington in Kansas City where young Harry was employed. Harry was very taken with Remington and his stories and artistic depictions of life in the west. Eventually Harry moved to Emporia, Kansas where he worked as a Railroad Telegrapher.
