Biography
Modernist, abstract artist Shirley Black, 92, died of natural causes on Monday, May 5, 2014 in Paradise Valley, Arizona, where she lived for 20 years. Her son Leon Black, his wife Debra and their four children Benjamin, Joshua, Alexander, and Victoria; and her daughter Judy Black and her husband Richard Schlosberg mourn the loss of a beloved mother and grandparent. Born Shirley Lubell on June 20, 1921 in New York City, she grew up in New York City and lived in Westport, Connecticut as well. She pursued a life-long interest in the arts. She was an accomplished water colorist and her works of art were shown at the Alonzo Gallery in New York City. Often inspired by nature, her love of flowers and plants was realized in her vibrant gardens and paintings. She was married to Eli Black for 29 years, who passed away in 1975. Her second husband, William Kash, died in 2010, after 28 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her sister, Grace Borgenicht, and her brother, Benedict Lubell.
