Biography

Milton W. Bond, age 92, of Stratford, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Bridgeport Hospital. Born in Bridgeport, the son of the late Wallace and Mary Bond, he had been a lifelong area resident. Mr. Bond retired following 30 years of service as a Tool Maker for Remington Arms in Bridgeport. He was a self-taught artist who did reverse glass painting for over 40 years. His critically acclaimed work has been shown worldwide including the Palace of Versailles, The American Museum in Bath, England, the Smithsonian Institute, the Fennimore House, Cooperstown, NY and the White House. He was a true master of his craft and one of the most successful reverse glass painters of all time. Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Bond of Stratford; a son, James Bond of Omaha, NE; two nieces and two nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Richard Bond and two sisters, Mildred Foster and Ruth Bond.

Signed and dated, lower right; Reverse glass painting is a technique practiced by only a handful/of masters today. In the forefront stands Milton Bond, whose primitives/evoke the spirit and essence of Americana./Milton Bond comes from a long line of New England oystermen and/sailors. He was owner and master of one of the last commercial sailing/vessels on Long Island Sound./His work is included in many collections in the United States and/abroad. He holds a first prize from the National Miniature Show in 1976./His paintings are in the exhibition "Three Centuries of Connecticut Folk Art," and have been exhibited at the Hartford Atheneum, Museum of/Art Science and Industry, Lyman Allyn Museum, and the New Haven Colony/Historical Society./Milton Bond/1980/Depot Westport Conn Winter, 1923", label verso
