Biography

Beatrice C. Sawyer, wife of the late Warren L. Sawyer and long time resident of Westport, CT passed away at her home after suffering a short illness, on Wednesday July 18, 2018. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Beatrice was born in Milford, CT on December 13, 1919 and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rilla (Roberge) Couture. She was a 1937 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School. She was a tap dancer when she was a girl and was given the opportunity to be a Radio City Rockette while in her teens. Beatrice was also an artist and exhibited her works at various local venues in her youth and won a full scholarship to Pratt Institute. She also studied opera, al bel canto at Carnegie Hall with her husband Warren. Beatrice was a direct descendent of 1600s French explorer, Jesuit lay missionary and member of the Iroquois Council, Guillaume Couture. She was an avid genealogy buff, having traveled to research her and her husband's family origins in England, France and Canada and had an article published in a well-known genealogy publication. She sang soprano in the St. Luke Choir and before that she was a member of the St. Paul's on the Green choir in Norwalk. She was also a secretary as well as a legal secretary and worked for GE, General Signal and in the 1960s, worked for Food for Biafra. In 1967, as an activist, she lent an artistic hand by designing and distributing fliers for and assisted in the Save Cockenoe Now movement which helped thwart United Illuminating's efforts to build a 14-story nuclear power plant on the Westport Island. She also assisted the late Ruth Steinkraus Cohen, friend and longtime Westport resident, in the creation of our annual June Day celebration. She was also successful in fighting to preserve open space on Bermuda Road, where she raised her children.
Beatrice was a loving wife, beloved mother of five girls and grandmother of seven grandchildren who adored her. Survivors include four daughters: Jane Sawyer of Bakersfield, CA, Marian Sawyer of Westport, CT, Suzanne Reimers of New Milford, CT and Nancy Sawyer-Ramirez of Westport, CT. She had seven grandchildren: Gabriel Koerner, Lucy Bollington, Christopher Bollington, Rebecca Ramirez, Kimberly Ramirez, Danny Reimers and Jamie Awad. In addition to her husband Beatrice was predeceased by one daughter: Cindy Sawyer-Bollington.
