Biography

Edelman is a painter in acrylics and oil, whose work has been exhibited nationally in many museums, galleries, and universities. Rita Edelman's art has evolved out of her interest in symbols. Early Egyptian hieroglyphs are the point of departure for her current series which is based on shards and fragments from excavations of ancient Egyptian sites. Her work is really about using marks to convey the ineffable, suggesting rather than defining. She makes layer on layer of marks, a web, if you will, allowing the unexpected to arise. A Vanished World will be on view in the Gallery from November 2-30. All are welcome to attend an opening reception which will be held concurrently with Main Hall artist Barney Levitt on Saturday, November 9 at 2:00 pm. Rita Edelman's paintings have been exhibited in many museums, galleries and universities throughout the U.S. She has been a recipient of a New England Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. Edelman is represented in major public and corporate collections. Reviews and essays about her work have appeared in Art News, Arts Magazine and her biography appears in Who's Who in American Art.
