Biography
Jak Kovatch is a printmaker and painter. Early in his career, he worked in the Walt Disney Studios’ animation department, where he designed stage sets, and also worked as a freelance illustrator. He has spent more than 45 years teaching art design students. He has exhibited his work locally, nationally, and internationally. A longtime Westport resident and former faculty member of The Famous Artist School, Jak Kovatch has been recognized nationally and internationally since 1949 when he first exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Since 1952 Kovatch has been working on a series of etchings, paintings, sculpture exploring human form. A native of Los Angeles, he studied at art in California and at the Art Students League, New York. For many years, while going to school or painting in the daytime, he was on call nights and weekends for X-ray duty in hospital and clinic ER, gaining valuable information about the human body and its working. He is on the Silvermine faculty, teaching life drawing, and a member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists.
