Biography
Garo Antreasian was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 16, 1922. He began studying lithography at age seventeen at his high school and followed that with formal art training at the School of the Herron Art Institute where he received his BFA in 1948. He also studied printmaking at the Art Students’ League under Will Barnet and at Atelier 17 with Stanley William Hayter in the late 1940s in New York. After working as an instructor at the School of the Herron Art Institute, Antreasian became the first technical director and master printer at the newly formed Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles. He followed Tamarind to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he also taught in the Art Department of the University of New Mexico. Antreasian is represented in the collections of the University of New Mexico Fine Arts Museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Brooklyn Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He won numerous awards and grants throughout his career, including an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Purdue University.
